Hunza Ecolodge is a place for ecotourism which offers glamping, a treehouse and mini camping, or can be rented out as group accommodation, in Southern Hungary. Our 2 ha of land is located at the border of the forest, in a little village, Bodolyabér. This small scaled facility is designed with great care for private zones and communal places, brightened by a big variety of edible plants. Close to nature, with a deep respect for nature.

From the land, you can directly walk or cycle into the forest through which several swim and fishing lakes can be reached. At 2 km from Hunza Ecolodge, medicinal thermal baths are located and nearby there is the city of Pécs, a vibrant cultural hotspot, Unesco World Heritage. The region around Hunza, called Baranya, is the most Southern part of Hungary blessed with lush green hills, 4 beautiful seasons and an outstanding summer.

Your hosts will operate as passionate guides to let you discover the most beautiful places in the surroundings. At the Hunza ecolodge an assortment of seasonal organic fruits and vegetables, home-made bread and other products is available. Twice a week delicious food is cooked in our enjoyable home cooking evenings.

Feel welcome and be enchanted by this unique place!

our philosophy

The Hunza ecolodge is inspired by travelling, meeting other cultures and seeing the diversity of rainforests and coral reefs. Gastronomic and permaculture courses created the philosophy of this welcoming place.

Earth care. The wonder of nature and the environment get a deep respect at Hunza. This can be seen in our way of building, gardening and living.

By building the ecolodge, we always prefer local and low-impact energy materials. Hunza searches professionals from the region to use old time techniques such as building the typical Hungarian ‘bubós kemece’.

Our lush and diverse garden is aimed to nourish the guests. Step by step we are reaching that goal. Because a healthy soil is the indicator of the diverse life forms, the soil receives the best attention by composting, mulching, not by digging nor ploughing. A huge variety of plants is grown to obtain a tasty seasonal assortment of vegetables, fruits and herbs. We collect rainwater on the land and from the roofs to integrate it in daily life such as to wash, to show and to irrigate the greenhouse.

In an encouraging way we hope to inspire people and be inspired by them. For us as well earth care is a learning process.

People care. We want the best for our guests. Whether it is a  holiday, a food concept or a workshop that leads you to Hunza, we will welcome you and take care with attention to your demands. Please come and have a good time!

The Hunza place has enough space and a strict maximum capacity to maintain the tranquility and personal space that people are looking for. There are many different spots to discover in the garden or in our forest to play games, read a book or listen to the sound of nature. The shared summer kitchen, the fireplace and the evening terrace  are the perfect spots to gather and meet nice people around a  large table.

Hunza has a great respect for the  local people in the village. Our neighbours for whom self-sustainability is not a hip trend, but a natural way of life passed through generations. The abundance of delicious fruits, vegetables or the wines from up the wine hill of Bodolyabér intrigues us every day. We try to show our village ideas and techniques we are bringing from abroad.

If we need extra hands, we always look around us as close as possible, but also volunteers from everywhere  can come and bring ideas. This creates the interesting mix of ideas, needed for a  place like Hunza.

Fair share. The prices at Hunza are being kept low  for the offered quality. Anyone should be able to come to Hunza, organic food is not only grown for people who can afford . If necessary a social discount can always be asked for. The production of the ecological garden and the extras  are offered at democratic prices or free of charge. If  possible, Hunza will always try to support the local community.

By harvesting and taking care of our land, we maintain a fair share towards our garden and nature.During the workshops or by helping us in the garden, knowledge is shared between people. Also this means fair share to us.

This philosophy drives us to do Hunza with passion and this will be felt at the ecolodge. No extremes although, just in a subtle and easy-going way visitors should experience this!

Both of us have a strong passion for the beauty of the green rolling hills of the Baranya, lush forests, fine wines and the cultural getaway of Pécs. We fell in love under the apple tree at Hunza, no reason to say that the connection between us grew, and so did the connection with this place.

Several years passed before we took the risk and moved from Gent in Belgium to the peasant valley of Bodolyabér. During these years, we travelled to get inspiration, studied different courses to strengthen our background and did organic event catering for a living.

In 2014, expecting a baby, we followed our hearts and moved to Hungary. Two months later Nándor was born and our dream to raise a family close to nature and in a great climate was set. In 2016 we welcomed Huba, our second little hero.

Year by year our project will grow, but we are proud of where we got so far and thankful for all the help and good energy we got from many people. We want to thank all the previous guests and their enthusiasm, and to the guests to come, this will raise Hunza to a truly unique place to visit and a place that will not be forgotten.

Milady, a calm but strong woman with a big heart for people, herbs and plants. Roeland, a creative mind who always finds the energy to do it. Milady, the social worker and herbalist; Roeland, the gardener and chef. Little Nándor and Huba both have a passion for dancing, like to taste everything from the garden prepared by their dad and love the animals and plants mommie teaches them about.
